Sustainable development is development that ensures the satisfaction of current needs without compromising future generations' capacity to satisfy their own needs.

Concrete examples of voluntary commitment

Personnel protection

To raise customers 'awareness of ESCOTA employees' safety on motorway sites, the company regularly airs risk prevention messages on Radio Trafic FM (107.7) and displays them on Variable Message Signs. These messages inform motorists of employees' presence on motorways, encouraging them to limit their speed and to respect safety rules.

Road Safety Campaigns

Safety campaigns are organised by ESCOTA's six districts in PACA region schools or upon the request of local authorities for educational themed days. These campaigns are aimed at raising public awareness, especially among children and teenagers, of the importance of road safety.

ESCOTA's Traffic Engineering and Operation department organises yearly training sessions for driving school instructors. Agreements are also signed with those driving schools enabling them to have free access to motorways to train drivers.

Operation "Children Without Christmas"

Operation "Children Without Christmas" began in 1994 and is organised around three sites: Pont-de-l'Etoile Toll (A52), Antibes Toll (A8), and Meyrargues Toll (A51). Each year, ESCOTA sponsors a ten-day toy, game and book drive. These toys are later handed over by ESCOTA districts to associations at their request. Thanks to the generosity of our customers, some 30,000 toys are distributed each year to associations working, to the delight of the children.

Save the Hermann Tortoise

The programme "Save the Hermann Tortoise" on the Vidauban Sud rest area (A8) fell within the framework of the 3-year partnership agreement signed between the ASF group and the Nicolas Hulot Foundation for Nature and Humanity. The Hermann Tortoise, a rare species which is protected in mainland France has, since 2004 been the focus of greatest attention. At the end of July, a whole day was taken to inform hundreds of children and their parents of the need to protect this species and its environment and to prevent fire risks which are the principal cause of this land tortoise's retreat into the Massif des Maures. "Tortoise bridges" have been installed on the A57, which crosses the Massif des Maures, to enable these tortoises to cross from one side of the forest to another.

Household Waste Collection

ESCOTA, together with the local authorities, has made a commitment to collecting household waste in rest areas. This partnership is aimed at streamlining recycling procedures, thereby cutting costs. Such partnerships strengthen ESCOTA's sustainable development policy on recycling. Since 2004, the programme, which was put in place in 2003 for recycling paper and cardboard, was expanded to the entire company, which now recycles industrial waste (tyres, scrap iron and other reusable waste).

"PACA for tomorrow"

ESCOTA is member of the "PACA for tomorrow" association which, on the occasion of the forum organised by member companies, called on its interns to take advantage of PACA's major infrastructure projects. This regional association for sustainable development aims to strike a certain balance between socio-economic needs and ecological concerns. ESCOTA shares its objectives and expertise in sustainable development with interns through its various activities.
